Competition will be fierce with narrowly beaten finalists Davetalevu returning from Fiji, along with another 30 strong squads that will be out to stop the Kiwis, including many national rugby 7’s teams entered into the tournament as club sides. Spectators can witness the skills of players from teams such as the USA Eagles, Hong Kong Dragons and Durban Harlequins. The weekend will be action packed and fun for all the family both on and off the pitch. The rugby village is bigger and better than ever with a special kid’s entertainment zone, an array of F&B, a DJ to kick off the party and a fantastic photo competition for all to enter with prizes to be won for the best ladies, kids and action shots taken over the weekend. Tournament Chairman Jon Robinson is delighted at the quality of talent coming to Singapore for this anniversary event, “Over the past 60 years, this event has grown from a domestic competition to an international event featuring some of the world’s most eminent teams. We are proud to host our friends and neighbours for what is set to be a thrilling weekend of rugby and family entertainment. It will be a particularly special occasion as we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee and we look forward to many more years of action to come.” The much sought-after silver Albitt Cup was donated by Mrs Katherine Parentis in 1947 for the inaugural tournament and is named after Bernard Albitt who was Convenor of the SCC Rugby Section from 1931-32. The event expanded in 1982 to become the international spectacle it is today. It has grown to include a jug, bowl and plate competition along with the Cup. Many great rugby players have competed at this competition before going on to become top international stars of rugby union. These include former All Black’s Jonah Lomu, Zinzan Brooke, Eric Rush and Tana Umaga; Scottish and British Lions fullback Gavin Hastings and Fijian 7’s legend Waisale Serevi. We are sure to have the pleasure of watching more future legends as the weekend unfolds. It has been 25 years since a Singapore team took the title but perhaps this is the year where, with the crowd behind them, they will keep the Cup at home where it belongs.
