The draw for the 72nd edition of the Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (“The SCC 7s”) was conducted this evening, with former Australian Internationals Drew Mitchell and Lote Tuqiri helping to draw the teams that will be playing this weekend. The draw was conducted after the final game of the Nicholson Family memorial tournament which was held earlier in the day to remember the Nicholson family members lost in the tragic events in Sri Lanka over Easter this year.
In Group A, reigning Ablitt Cup Champions Daveta headline a group that includes long time visitors from the Northern Teritory East Arnhem, the Singapore Select team and first time entrants OGAS Bucks, a Singapore based invitational side. Daveta will certainly look to have an early start with their first game against the Singapore Select on day 1.
In Group B, Ponsonby District Rugby Football Club from Auckland New Zealand are looking for a stronger showing that last year, and want to desperately reclaim the title. They are joined in the group by the national development sides of Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka Tuskers) and Thailand (BKK 12). Rounding up the group are long time visitors from Japan, Kurumi who will face Ponsonby in their fight game of Saturday.
In Group C, last year’s finalists and long time friends and visitors from Darwin Casurina Cougars are looking to finally take the title. They will be joined by fellow Australians Palmyra, Tamariva from Japan and hosts The SCC. Palmyra will face Tamariva in the very first game of the day at 9.00am.
All in all it looks like another great tournament, so come on down and celebrate the best rugby has to offer, especially for those suffering from post Rugby World Cup withdrawal symptoms!
